Brow Lift, also known as Forehead Lift, alters those tissues (skin and muscle) that through increasing age cause furrowing of the forehead. Brow Lift is frequently combined with a Face-Lift and / or Blepharoplasty.

Who is suitable for brow lift?

A brow lift is most commonly performed in the 40-60 age range to minimize the visible effects of aging. However, it can also help people of any age who have developed furrows or frown lines due to stress or muscle activity.

Individuals with inherited conditions, such as a low, heavy brow or furrowed lines above the nose can achieve a more alert and refreshed look with this procedure.

What to think about at this stage

It is important that, before you see the surgeon, you consider what you are trying to achieve from your surgery. Smokers are advised to stop smoking for at least two weeks prior to surgery, in order to help healing and reduce the risk of infection. Smoking reduces the blood supply to the thin skin flaps created by the surgeon.

How is brow lift performed?

Basically, there are two surgical options; Open Brow Lift and Endoscopic Brow Lift.

  • Most cases are performed under general anaesthetic, although local anaesthetic with sedation is possible
  • Most patients remain in hospital overnight
  • The operation takes one or two hours
  • If your work is not physical, expect to return to work after one week
  • Expect to be back to normal physical exercise within four weeks
  • Open brow Lift- A coronal (crown) incision is made. It begins at about ear level and runs across the top of the forehead well behind the hairline. The underlying tissue is also removed to create a smooth, more youthful appearance.
  • Endoscopic Brow Lift- 3 or more short incisions are made in the scalp, through which an endoscope is inserted to view the tissues of the forehead. A separate instrument is then inserted through an additional incision to lift these structures and remove or otherwise alter the tissues.

Following the operation

As with all surgery, you must expect to feel bruised and sore. A bandage is applied to the forehead for two days to reduce swelling. Sutures are removed after one week. You may also be asked to keep your head elevated for a few days to help the swelling go down.

Risks & Complications

Cosmetic surgery is amongst the very safest of medical procedures. However, all patients must understand and accept that no surgical procedure is absolutely free from risk.

How long will the results of your brow lift last?

Often, patients don't realize how much their sagging forehead contributed to the signs of aging until they see how much younger and more rested they appear after the lift. Although a brow lift does not stop the clock, it can minimize the appearance of aging for years.

You will always look younger than you otherwise would, but over the years your face will continue to age.
