Body-Contouring Surgery, as its name suggests, encompasses all those operations designed to improve the overall shape and tone of the body.
We define body-contouring procedures as follows:
- Fat Removal (liposculpture, liposuction, male chest reduction)
- Skin-Tightening (abdominoplasty, arm, thigh and buttock lifts)
- Muscle-Enhancing ( abdominal muscle plication, calf, buttock and pectoral implants, and abdominal six-pack etching)
Why do patients seek body-contouring surgery?
Our patients have often battled for many years to either reduce localised fat deposits, to improve the shape and tone of their body through exercise, or to improve the appearance of cellulite etc. For many of these problems, body-contouring surgery is the only answer. How do you decide which treatments to have?
- If there is localised fat- liposculpture is the answer
- If there is excess skin- some form of lift or tuck is required
- If there is poor muscle definition- exercise and / or muscle enhancing surgery is needed
- If the appearance of the skin is the issue then a number of options are available
For any one anatomical area one or more procedures might be necessary (e.g. both fat and removal and skin tightening on a fat saggy abdomen). Similarly, for any one patient, a combination of procedures might be recommended for different areas (e.g. skin tightening to the arms, liposculpture to the hips etc).
How far the patient wishes to go is entirely up to him or her. However, it is vital to understand that only through a detailed consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon are you really able to determine the best course of action for you.
How are these procedures performed?
- All are performed under general anaesthetic, however, liposculpture may also be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation.
- Most take about sixty minutes to perform. Larger abdominoplasties, liposculptures or multiple procedures take longer.
- Liposculpture is usually performed as a day case. Larger liposculptures and the other lifts and implants involve an overnight stay.
- If your work is not physical, expect to return to work within one to two weeks.
- Expect to be back to normal physical exercise after six weeks.
Following the operation
As with all surgery, you must expect to feel bruised and sore. The treated areas are likely to be swollen. You may have to wear a tight support garment for several weeks. Most patients are able to fully resume normal activity within three to four weeks. Sutures will be removed after ten to fourteen days. Risks & Complications
Cosmetic surgery is amongst the very safest of medical procedures. However, all patients must understand and accept that no surgical procedure is absolutely free from risk. At Consultation, Mr Rezai will discuss these risks with you.
How long will the results of your body-contouring surgery last?
The very considerable benefits of these highly successful treatments to all intents and purposes are permanent. By maintaining a sensible weight, and preferably also by exercising, the patient will be doing all they can to both maintain and even improve the result of their surgery. Any subsequent pregnancy or excessive weight gain may obviously have implications.
